Catching a marlin in Daytona Beach is certainly not an easy challenge. Marlins are rare, having suffered greatly from over-fishing. In Daytona Beach, we typically only find blue marlin and white marlin. Black or striped marlin is even scarcer. When fishing in Daytona Beach, it is more likely that you will catch other billfish species instead, such as swordfish and sailfish.
Marlins do come near Daytona Beach when they migrate on the Gulf Stream current, but they are seldom caught there. In order to catch a marlin, you need to go farther offshore, which is out of range for our shorter Daytona Beach fishing charters. Ideally, you need to be fishing along the edge of the continental shelf in depths ranging between 600ft and 1 000ft of water. To increase your chances further, we can take you into the Bahamas side of the Gulf Stream as opposed to the Daytona Beach side. We have found that fishing for marlin is generally better in the Bahamas, and we do offer Bahamas fishing charters out of Daytona Beach.
Marlins are incredibly fast animals and are known to reach speeds nearing 70mph. This is likely faster than any boat you may be travelling on and is important to remember when targeting them. You need to be moving between seven and fifteen knots in order to successfully catch these giants. Your bait will not resemble the marlins common diet in any way if you are cruising slower than seven knots, and it is likely to get eaten by other fish instead. If you are moving faster than fifteen knots then your bait will simply fall apart and look even more unnatural in the water.
Our Daytona Beach fishing charters catch marlin using live bait. Small tuna and skipjacks work extremely well. However, marlins can be caught on frozen bait and lures. If you choose to use frozen bait then it will help if you combine it with a skirt. This will attract marlins and keep your bait protected.
Marlins are mystical fish. They are highly elusive, and they are phenomenally powerful. These gigantic fish are known to pull fishing boats through miles of ocean water. Fascinating animals, marlins are truly beautiful. They have become an icon for sports fishing world-wide, but particularly in Daytona Beach. This is largely due to the classic tale by Ernest Hemingway entitled The Old Man and the Sea, in which an aged fisherman has to battle a giant marlin by himself on the tiniest of fishing boats.
